Nanophotonics research explores fundamental science in optics and their light-matter interactions at the nanoscale, and it develops various small-scale photonic devices. Nanotechnology is providing the required fabrication and measurement technologies for developing such nanoscale photonic and electronic components.

Semiconducting nanowire-field effect transistors (NW-FETs) hold particular promise, though contemporary NW approaches are inadequate for realistic applications. Solid-State Energy Devices I (TR 12:30pm-1:50pm, Prof. Hongxing Jiang): Introduction to fundamentals of solar cells, including thin film, tandem, and nanostructured solar cell materials and devices. Our research interests are to understand the novel physical properties of strongly correlated materials of fundamental interest, and to further develop their potential for infrared applications, especially in the field of nanophotonics and quantum information. Nanophotonics and Detectors Introduction This course dives into nanophotonic light emitting devices and optical detectors, including metal semiconductors, metal semiconductor insulators, and pn junctions. We will also cover photoconductors, avalanche photodiodes, and photomultiplier tubes.
